چکیده

Ship detection is a crucial application for global monitoring for environment and security. It permits to monitor traffic, fisheries, and to associate ships with oil discharge. An automatic ship detection approach for RADARSAT Fine Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image is described and assessed using in situ ship validation information collected during field experiments conducted on August 6, 2004. Ship detection algorithms consist of five stages: calibration, land masking, prescreening, point positioning, and discrimination. The fine image was acquired of Ulsan Port, located in southeast Korea, and during the acquisition, wind speeds between 0 m/s and 0.4 m/s were reported. The detection approach is applied to anchoring ships in the anchorage area of the port and its results are compared with validation data based on Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) radar. Our analysis for anchoring ships, above 62 m in length, indicates a 100 % ship detection rate for the RADARSAT single beam mode.

Ship Detection in SAR Image Based on the Alpha-stable Distribution

This paper describes an improved Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) ship detection algorithm in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image based on Alphastable distribution model. Typically, the CFAR algorithm uses the Gaussian distribution model to describe statistical characteristics of a SAR image background clutter. However, the Gaussian distribution is only valid for multilook SAR image...

Visibility of Turbulent Ship Wakes in Dual- Polarized RADARSAT-2 Imagery

--The observations of ship wakes in RADARSAT-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar fine beam mode images are described. Wakes were observed in about 50 percent of cases where ship detection was accompanied by an Automatic Identification of Ships (AIS) report. These were mostly turbulent wakes. The goal of the research was to understand the physical mechanisms and the factors involved in the visibility of ...

The Extended Sub-look Analysis In Polarimetric SAR Data For Ship Detection

The monitoring of maritime areas with remote sensing is essential for security reasons and also for the conservation of environment. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can play an important role in this matter by considering the possibility of acquiring high-resolution images at nighttime and under cloud cover. Recently, the new approaches based on the sub-look analysis for preserving the infor...

Ship Detection with Spectral Analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Comparison of New and Well-Known Algorithms

The surveillance of maritime areas with remote sensing is vital for security reasons, as well as for the protection of the environment. Satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offers large-scale surveillance, which is not reliant on solar illumination and is rather independent of weather conditions. The main feature of vessels in SAR images is a higher backscattering compared to the sea ...
